George Friedrich Händel, coetaneo di Johann Sebastian Bach (erano nati ambedue nel 1785, in Germania), è considerato, assieme allo stesso Bach ed all’italiano Antonio Vivaldi, uno dei tre più importanti compositori dell’Epoca Barocca [grossomodo dal 1600 al 1750].

Visse la seconda parte della sua vita in Inghilterra, dove fu per molti anni compositore di corte del re Giorgio I e di suo figlio Giorgio II Hannover [Hannover è una città tedesca da cui era originaria la sua stirpe reale].

La sua attività di compositore di corte lo portò a dedicarsi moltissimo alla musica corale e sua è la melodia – tratta dall’oratorio “Il Messia” – su cui, nel 1719, Isaac Watts (1674–1748), costruì il testo di Joy to the World, diventato poi un classico anglosassone per il Natale. Va detto però che in realtà il testo non fa riferimento alla nascita di Gesù, ma sua alla venuta finale.
